Ever feel like you want to make an impact on Earth, but you’re just one voice? You have a passion for a cause but don’t know where to start. Maybe it’s conservation, human rights, or climate change. You see events that weigh heavy on your heart, but it’s such a massive issue; where does one even start?

I want to share a story from a morning that changed how I viewed my place in the world and what I can do to impact.

It was early as my 5 alarms blared. I laid there, contemplating skipping my run per usual. Yet, I got up and got my coffee before setting out to hit the trail. I got to my favorite running spot, a loop that skims Couchville Lake outside of Nashville. I love this running spot because it hugs the shoreline in the woods of Long Hunter State Park. The views are immaculate and get my mind off the fact I’m doing cardio and may die.

Anyway, as I was quickly running out of oxygen and the trees went by, I noticed a coke can along the side of the trail. My focus shifted from surviving my morning cardio to why.

I wasn’t saying why this did a person throw a coke can out when they could’ve walked to the nearest trashcan, although I did think that.

But

Why do we have so much stuff that gets thrown away?

Why do we have mountains of trash? Like the one that looms over Murfreesboro and is so big pilots use it as a navigation reporting point.
Why are humans so inherently wasteful?

Essentially, I was questioning all of humanity’s motives behind trashing the planet because of one little coke can on a random morning.

Yes, you may be thinking it was the lack of O2 to start diving into solving the world’s trash problem, but it got me thinking.

What can I do about such a monumental problem?

That was the Ah! Ha! Moment for me.

Yes, I may be a single human in a world of billions, but I thought back to the quote that goes like, “Even a little pebble in a massive ocean makes a ripple.”

So, I picked up the soda can and got to thinking. I welcomed the stream of thoughts as it got my mind off the miles, and soon I was back in my car with a plan.
